The theatre lovers of Jaipur got to witness William Shakespeare’s great tragedy ‘Macbeth’ today at Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK). Surely, an appropriate tribute to the great playwright on his 400th death anniversary. Although in Manipuri language, this is for the first time that Ratan Thiyam directed play was staged in Jaipur at Rangayan.
The very name ‘Macbeth’ symbolizes ambition, unlimited desire and greed which ultimately lead to violence. The play through its spectacular aural and visual aesthetic with potent thematic explorations will show how Macbeth has become a disease (greed and ambition) spreading at an unbelievable pace in the contemporary world and the so called advanced civilization.
The play showcased how despite huge efforts made to do away with the flaw of burning ambition, it still has a place in our everyday lives.
Writer, director, designer, musician, painter and actor, Ratan Thiyam is one of the most important and influential theatre makers at work in the international performance scene. The play is being staged by the Imphal based ‘Chorus Repertory Theatre’.
