Selfie is a killer pleasure – Dr Ashok Panagariya

‘Selfie’, killed about 47 people in across the world. Barring the small number, it is like a pandemic. A paradox where external and a pleasure seeking process killing a human being. Dr Ashok Panagariya explains that it is akin to a man dying in the lap of a women after attaining sexual spiritualism intense desire is common to both to seek extraordinary pleasure.

Is it not another paradox that on one hand, man is vigorously pursuing himself towards different kinds of complimentary alternative therapies including Yoga, meditation practices and or anything near nature to attain spirituality while spiritualism is a process of moving away from the self and merging into higher cerebrally evolution. Selfie is retrogression moving towards finding one’s own identity by picturising and seeking short term pleasures.

Interestingly selfie affects population across the world rich and poor, good and bad and ugly and beautiful all alike may not be surprising that like the basic instincts of sex, hunger and music are strongly genetically wired this probably remained suppressed till the time self portrait photograph taken from the digital cameras are made available.

The self is the subject of one’s own experience of phenomena perception, emotions and thoughts.

The philosophy of self is probably its own uniqueness and the huge capacity of the human being to be fond of his own virtue leads into self apprehension through selfies. While self plays an important part in human motivation, cognition, behavior and social identity. It keeps one bogged down to self centralism and blocks the external inputs for his own growth.

The neural basis of self is the idea of using modern concept of neuroscience described and understand the biological processes that neural human perception of self understanding. It could therefore be a double edged  sword while proper evolution of self to higher neocortical thinking of sympathy, empathy, altruism and in the process strengthening the relaxation response to build up a relationship of self to universe and moving towards spiritualism.

While on the other hand of the spectrum would be picturising, projecting and perceiving self towards attaining euphoria and ultimately leading towards self and ego centrism and giving more opportunities for the psychologist to work on.

The life is modelled through the various neuro-chemical and neuro-electrical phenomena, flooding between the self and the spiritualism passing through the hell and heaven with different kinds of pleasures being perceived, experienced and enjoyed. When the older and societal brain takes over, it is a mass hysteria of the kind of selfie phenomena while those who are able to evolve and exercise higher cortical evolution can of course go beyond to, a state of real pleasure and long term happiness rather than burst of short phases of pleasures, which may provide a kick but danger could always be an accompaniment.
