Sachin Pilot: The Unsuitable Boy in Raje’s-than

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has declared that ‘Sachin Pilot is just a child’ in Rajasthan politics. Raje was addressing a rally in Sojat in Pali district of Rajasthan in the second phase of Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra in Marwar region. The first phase of Raje’s yatra in Marwar was marred by protest, black flags and even unprecedented incidents of stone pelting at two places. But, undeterred by overwhelming surge of anti incumbency sentiments and charges of corruption Vasundhara Raje is not willing  concede Sachin Pilot as formidable opponent, why?

Sachin Pilot hails from a village named Vaidpura near Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Last, his name was splashed in national headlines was when he figured in list of politicians named in “Paradise Papers” allegations in November 2017. It was an investigation conducted by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism cited related to off shore companies. Earlier, he was also director of a company in Dairy business. He is been state chief of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) in Rajasthan for last four years.

Charming as he is, Sachin Pilot is darling of Delhi media circles; only problem being that their opinion changes as quickly as the taste of their cocktails.

In Political equations, the biggest factor working against the young Sauvé politician is that he is a Gurjar by caste. Gurjars in Rajasthan have been traditionally a BJP vote bank as they are directly in struggle with Meena community in eastern Rajasthan. Kirori Lal Meena coming under wings of Vasundhara Raje recently has quietly shifted focus on Gurjars in eastern Rajasthan that – will they be voting for congress now? Reason being that Meena community is feeling relieved after Kirori Lal Meena has joined BJP as their puzzle for supporting Congress or Kirori Lal Meena – raising flag of contempt in name of Meena pride, has been solved. So with Meena already in the congress fold, will Gurjars in eastern Rajasthan will be supporting Congress is the question which Sachin Pilot has not answered yet.

Gurjars in central Rajasthan in districts of Ajmer, Bhilwara and Tonk are mostly in camp of BJP and unlikely to leave their comfort zones. Sources confirm that Sachin Pilot in a bid to create his own cult in Rajasthan has muzzled many in the old guards of congress and promoted ‘loyal’ workers.  Fact is that ‘Childish’ Sachin Pilot, as Vasundhara Raje has pointed out, has tried to fight and show dominance within the Rajasthan congress more than he has attacked state BJP government in last four years.

One can assume that Sachin Pilot cannot convince his Gurjar caste brethren to vote for congress in 2018 assembly election. Secondly, Sachin Pilot has not been able to find a safe seat himself also. So even if congress puts a risky bet on him as a Chief Ministerial candidate after 2018 election, they would not like to face another glitch of one of their ‘reigning’ chief minister loosing election against the formidable wave of Modi just ahead of crucial 2019 general elections. This is the reason, Vasundhara Raje, who is single handedly carrying the flag of BJP into assembly elections in Rajasthan in 2018, is not finding Sachin Pilot worthy as an ‘Opponent’.

From congress’s point of view, Rajasthan is not the yet another state out of 29 in all, which it has lost in last election and wants to capture it back. Rajasthan is important for the Congress’s policy of Gandhian Socialism as it has been crucible for all its flagship social schemes ranging from NREGS to RTI to Right to Education to Right to Service Guarantee. Deft implementation of such social projects in their nascent stage needs a sensitive political mind with having a firm belief in people’s welfare.

Who will lead congress in Rajasthan assembly poll in 2018 is up to Rahul Gandhi to decide but Vasundhara Raje has made it clear what she thinks of Rahul Gandhi’s satrap in Jaipur. However self assured Sachin Pilot may appear in public but there is always an immature vibe which follows him. Politics is Rajasthan runs as deep as the water in the desert land and Sachin Pilot would need some ‘Jadu’ to shed his ‘kal ka chora’ image.
